I once stood outside a glass door and looked at a sign that said “CLOSED.”I really wanted to go into that store. But the two-sided sign wasn’t final; it just flipped.
The staff takes breaks sometimes. There are times it’s not opening hours yet. And if you stay long enough to see the shadows move and the light change, you’ll often see the same sign quietly change to “OPEN. “There was nothing dramatic. Just a change in time.
But thereโs another kind of closed sign. The one that means the shop is no longer in business or has vacated the space. That door won’t open again, no matter how long you wait or pray. And that’s when discernment comes in. Some things in life are worth waiting for. Others want a calm, wise walk away.
During my transition season, I applied for jobs on Seek, LinkedIn, and job boards, which felt like throwing dice. Some doors had signs that said “Closed for now.” Some said, “Permanently closed. I felt like Peter stepping out of the boat, place of experience and expertise, onto unfamiliar water, because Jesus said, โCome.โ And like Peter, I started to sink. Because faith doesnโt always feel like flying, sometimes it feels like fumbling.
